Case Studies / Airnet
Back to Case Studies

We are deploying a program to support an in-house application to collect data for a scanner application. (Symbol 1500) The program has just successfully completed field tests and we are now deploying the software. The initial usage will be about 100 units in the field.

I have not spend much time on the project lately since the initial development is now completed and have now moved on to other projects. The SuperWaba VM seems quite stable and is a good product. Perhaps the only thing missing at this point is some way to integrate into a simple database to handle more complex data relationships than a catalog can offer.

Future applications we may target for next year or beyond are:
1) Flight schedules for the Palm pilot.
2) Pilot trip sheet reportorint (we run our own airline)
3) Pilot log books
4) Aircraft maintenance logs

AirNet is essentially an air freight company. We specialize in high value late night movements of financial documents (mostly cancelled bank checks), medical shipments and other specialty items. We operate out own aircraft (approximately 120 planes). All of our planes are small (the biggest currently are Lear Jets (we have 33 of these).

Airnet is a public (NYSE Symbol ANS) company that currently has approximately 1000 employees and does about $135 million (USD) in annual revenue. There is better information on all the company and product offerings on our web site (http://www.airnet.com) My part in all of this I am the software development manager, we have 8 programmers here on staff to develop and maintain package tracking systems, Web interfaces to our customers, billing systems and part/maintenance systems (we also maintain our own aircraft). Our software systems are written in a variety of languages (C, PowerBuilder, Informix 4GL and Java).

We are slowly migrating to Java and started primarily with our dynamic customer web sites (On line shipping). We are looking for SuperWaba to deploy a replacement tracking system on the SPT 1500. We are currently using an older model of a contact scanner that our couriers use out in the field. The number of potential replacement units will be 200-300 units. Not only do our own employees use these units but we also hire outside contractors to do pickup and delivery work in areas where we do not have the volume to justify full time employees.

Note: Airnet has donated a Symbol SPT 1500 making scanner support in SuperWaba possible.
